Chapter 25
The shower felt wonderful as all the sand washed down the drain. Jacqueline really felt as though she had worn the whole desert. When she got out of the shower, she realized that she was starting to feel normal again. Figures that she had to get stuck in the desert for that! Grace was just stirring... beginning to gradually wake up.
“Wake up, sleepy head,” Jacqueline teased and tickled her nose softly. “I have already had a huge adventure while you were still sleeping, studying the inside of your eyelids.”
Grace grimaced, shoved Jacqueline's finger out of her face, while she tried to keep her eyes from falling shut again.
“What was your adventure?” she moaned with a yawn.
She laughed when Jacqueline finished retelling her take. “I should have warned you not to go out into the desert with my brother. He is sure to get stuck. It’s pretty funny though.”
Once Grace got up and dressed they trudged downstairs to have some breakfast, which consisted of fruits galore, fresh bread, and jam. It was delicious and Jacqueline ate her fill. Brian shared the excitement of the morning with everyone at the table and her parents looked at her in alarm.
“Mother, Father, it was a lot of fun,” Jacqueline assured them. “I’m sure we were never in any danger.”
Her parents turned to face each other with raised eyebrows. “We would prefer you not to go and attempt anything so dangerous again.”
“It wasn’t dangerous. The most dangerous part of the whole thing were the camels. Really, we were fine,” she grumbled and could feel her ire rise. They frowned but didn’t pursue the issue.
After breakfast, Grace suggested that they put on their suits for a day at the beach. Jacqueline was only too happy to comply, since the trip into the desert had been taxing. The two of them giggled loudly as they raced up the stairs to change. Jacqueline paused for a moment as she put on her suit. She had never giggled while running up any stairs. But doing so with Grace, was almost therapeutic.
The beach did, indeed, prove to be restorative, warm and inviting. They strolled through the soft sand toward the brilliantly blue water, where they reclined onto their beach towel, soaking up the sun's heat. Between the soft splashing of the waves to shore and the distant call of seagulls, Jacqueline began to relax, the tension leave her body.
Grace poked her just as she was dozing off, and pointed to the sun. “You need to slather on suntan lotion... you are already starting to become nice and crispy on only your first day. It doesn't take long for that to happen here.”
Later in the afternoon Grace and Brian suggested that they head into town. Jacqueline reluctantly agreed, not really wanting to go out again. She still felt tired and didn't have much energy.
“This is where you will be skating,” Grace informed her as they pulled up to a large complex. Tall palms surrounded them, giving the necessary shade.
“We are going in?” she asked as they got out of the car.
